Introduction

The Corn Grows Ripe by Dorothy Rhoads is a wonderful example of historical fiction. The author and illustrator shows you how ancient mayan culture influenced the lives of Indians living in Central America in the 1940's. Through the eyes of Tigre, a boy caught between childhood and adulthood, we learn the customs and beliefs of an ancient culture. Tigre's experience growing up has lessons for you as you in become an adult. When you read this book think of yourself, as you too are caught between being a child and becoming an adult.
